The bands rehearsals leading upto the forthcoming Butlin's contest in Skegness are progressing very well. Preparations have been helped with full rehearsals and the band is confident it can improve on the 5th place they were awarded at last years contest.

Nathan Hamer his accepted the position of solo trombone and Michael Harrison is the band's new bass trombone player after spending the past few years with the Tongwynlais Band.

Mike Faro Conducts Concert At Maes Manor Hotel

The band wish to publically thank the experienced Mike Faro for conducting their short concert at The Maes Manor Hotel, Blackwood last Friday evening. Mike has been helping the band on and off over the past few months with the odd rehearsal and we were delighted when he accepted the invitation to conduct this concert at such short notice. We very much look forward to working with him again sometime in the near future.

8th October- 4th Place at Burry Port Contest

Following a satisfactory performance of Brass Metamorphosis, most band member came away from Burry Port's Memorial Hall last Saturday slighty disappointed.

Goff Richards' adjudication can only be described as being a little vague and doesn't totally fit the description of a 4th place performance. However the band did receive lots of positive remarks from independent listeners and just confirms the theory that own choice contests can sometimes be a bit of a lottery. Congratulations to the prize winners.

May 17th - 2nd place at Ebbw Vale Contest

The band is celebrating after winning 2nd prize at last Saturday's contest at Ebbw Vale Leisure Centre with a confident performance of Philip Sparke's "Endeavour".

Adjudicator David Read was  impressed by the standard of music he had heard in the 1st section and also commenting on the good ambitious choice of music made by the bands themselves. However he felt it was a choice between the top two prize winners, which he said presented problems as both were very good. But in the end he awarded 1st prize to the Newbridge (Celynen) Band whom where making their contest debut in the 1st section. Their accomplished performance of "Prisms" also earned them the best soloist prize. 3rd prize was awarded The RAF St Athan band.

Spring Concert Review

Details to follow shortly...................

April 5th -Brian Buckley helps the band

The band have engaged the services of Brian Buckley to fill in for MD Nigel Seaman in the lead upto to the Ebbw Vale contest on 15th May.

Nigel is away on tour with the National Orchestra of Wales and will continue his work with the band on his return. Brian Buckley is well known throughout the brass band world, especially as an adjudicator andhe will bring a great deal of ideas to the forthcoming rehearsals where the band will be working on Phillip Sparkes "Endeavour" which Nigel has chosen for the band to play at the Ebbw Vale contest next month.

Saturday 12th March-  Swansea Contest

A disappointing  performance at the Bramgwyn Hall in Swansea was rewarded with a lowly 7th position by adjudicator Alan Morrison. The band unfortunately didn't live up to its pre-contest "dark horse" expectation and there could be no complaints from band members. A nervous start to the testpiece Comedy Overture was our downfall and things never recovered. The only positive thing from the weekend was that band avoided relegation back to the 2nd section and will get another chance in the 1st section next year.

We would like to wish both Parc & Dare and Wrexham Brass good luck at the national finals in Harrogate in September.

February 25th - Porthcawl Miners Contest

The band made their debut at this entertainment contest recently, unfortunately despite putting together an entertaining programme they disappointed on the stage and were awarded last place. Adjudicator Garry Cutt heavily criticised the band in his remarks for general lack of dynamic contrast and over-blowing. Despite this many people still felt that we didn’t deserve last position. So it’s back to the drawing board and hope that a valuable lesson was learnt!

25th January - 5th Place At Skegness

I think it's safe to say that the entire band enjoyed their first visit to The Butlins Mineworkers Championships At Skegness.

The band gave a excellent performance of  "Ballet for Band", and although it didn't totally convince adjudicators Alan Morrisson & Barry Thompson they placed the band a creditable 5th. It was a mature performance of a testing piece which was expertly and delicately put together by the band's Musical Director Nigel Seaman whom was making his long awaited return in front of the band since his illness last year.

The Commitee would like to congratulate Nigel  and the band for such a professional job especially it's Principal players Chris Hughes (cornet), Lee Elliot (Soprano), Rob Sweet (Flugel), Nathan Davies (Euph) , Rob Samuel (Trombone) and Bass players Huw Coombes and Chris Powell
